Donald Trump’s campaign promise to stop the war in Ukraine in just one day was, like many of his bold claims, met with equal parts skepticism and applause.
While he didn’t quite deliver on the 24-hour timeline, he did manage to pull off something uniquely Trumpian: admitting that stopping the war might take a bit longer. This admission, delivered with his trademark bravado, was a reminder that Trump’s real skill lies not in keeping promises but in keeping everyone guessing.
Now, let’s talk about Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the comedian-turned-leader who has become the Greta Thunberg of war—except instead of holding up a “How Dare You?” sign, he’s holding out a donation box. Zelenskyy, who once played a president on TV, has found himself in a real-life drama where the stakes are much higher, and the audience is far less forgiving.
For over four years, Zelenskyy had Joe Biden “by the short hairs,” as the saying goes. The Biden family’s ties to Ukraine, particularly Hunter Biden’s lucrative board position with Burisma, provided ample fodder for conspiracy theories and political extortion. Zelenskyy, ever the opportunist, managed to extract billions in aid from a hapless Biden administration that couldn’t shake the stench of influence-peddling allegations. But when Biden’s star began to fade and Kamala Harris failed to step into the spotlight, Zelenskyy found himself in a precarious position.
Enter Donald Trump, the man who once publicly spanked Zelenskyy like a misbehaving child and sent him packing to Europe to beg for support. Zelenskyy, ever the tiny dancer, twirled his way across the continent, hoping the EU would back his play. But the EU, ever the civilized world’s little brother, essentially told him, “Sure, we’ll help—if you can get Big Brother America on board first.”
Zelenskyy, realizing he was essentially on his own, eventually returned to the one person he hoped he’d never have to ask for help again: Donald Trump.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy shared the details of a meeting between Ukrainian and American delegations in Saudi Arabia:
I received a report from our delegation on their meeting with the American team in Saudi Arabia. The discussion lasted most of the day and was good and constructive—our teams were able to discuss many important details.
Our position remains absolutely clear: Ukraine has been seeking peace from the very first second of this war, and we want to do everything to achieve it as soon as possible and in a reliable way—so that war does not return.
At this meeting with the Americans, Ukraine proposed three key points:
Silence in the skies—stopping missile strikes, bombs, and long-range drone attacks; silence at sea; real confidence-building measures in this whole situation, in which diplomacy is ongoing, which primarily means the release of prisoners of war and detainees—both military and civilian—and the return of Ukrainian children who were forcibly transferred to Russia.
The American side understands our arguments and considers our proposals. I am grateful to President Trump for the constructive conversation between our teams.
During today’s talks, the U.S. side proposed taking an even bigger first step—a 30-day full interim ceasefire, not only stopping missile, drone, and bomb attacks, not only in the Black Sea, but also along the entire front line.
Ukraine is ready to accept this proposal—we see it as a positive step and are ready to take it. Now, it is up to the United States to convince Russia to do the same. If Russia agrees, the ceasefire will take effect immediately.
Zelenskyy’s post reads like a diplomatic olive branch wrapped in a plea for help.
Still, Zelenskyy’s willingness to play along with Trump’s proposal shows just how desperate he is for a win—any win.
What’s truly fascinating is the role Trump plays in all of this. Critics love to paint him as a blundering buffoon, but the man has a knack for turning chaos into opportunity.
A friend of mine once quipped that a person can’t win at poker if he uses the same bluff. But what my friend failed to consider is that a bluff isn’t a bluff when God keeps dealing you straight flushes. Trump isn’t bluffing. And that’s the real “art of the deal”: to make people keep wondering when you will finally get bad cards.
Zelenskyy, the former comedian, now finds himself in a real-life sitcom where the punchlines are written in missile strikes and destructions of his country. Meanwhile, the only battle President Trump fights is against the people he defeated, only this time he burned their playbook.
As for Zelenskyy, I use Biden’s war only as an example. In fact, there exist plenty more examples.
Whether it’s closing the border or annexing Greenland, for the naysayers who hope Trump fails, I can’t help but chuckle. Trump thwarts them at every turn using nothing but common sense.
So, the idea that much of the world doesn’t actually want peace between Russia and Ukraine should fascinate deep thinkers. Why have a United Nations if we have all these warmongers out there? On the border, as the saying goes, “Fences make good neighbors”.
In the end, Trump’s real skill isn’t in keeping promises or even in winning wars, rebuilding Leftist economies, or closing borders, or making Canada America’s 51st state. Trump makes us believe that he might just pull off the impossible. And whether you love him or hate him, you have to admit: the man knows how to keep things interesting.
It’s not bragging, if you can back it up.
