The following article, The Left’s Blind Spot: Why Progressives Are the Real Dicks of America, was first published on The Black Sphere.
The Poker Tell of American Politics
You know the old poker adage: “If you can’t spot the mark, then you are the mark.” The same applies to spotting assholes—or, as we’ll call them here, dicks. And in American politics, the dicks aren’t who the media insists they are.
Take The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper, a man who built his career mocking conservatives. Recently, he ventured into the heart of MAGA country for his Comedy Central special MAGA: The Next Generation—and what he found shocked him.
The Great Awakening of the Smug Liberal
Klepper expected to meet frothing bigots. Instead, he encountered something far more unsettling: kindness.
“I had such a cynical perspective of the youth walking into this thing,” Klepper admitted to Variety. *“I expected to be confronted by a bunch of dicks—22-year-olds who want to rail on trans people in sports and kick out all the immigrants. But the cruelty wasn’t there.”*
This wasn’t an isolated epiphany. It’s part of a pattern. Reporters, comedians, and pundits—steeped in progressive groupthink—keep stumbling into the same revelation: The people they’ve been trained to despise are, in fact, decent.
The Left’s Bubble of Delusion
How many of these stories exist? Dozens. Maybe hundreds. The Washington Post’s embed with Trump voters, The Atlantic’s awkward realizations, even The New York Times’ occasional moments of clarity—they all follow the same arc:
-
Smug journalist enters conservative space.
-
Smug journalist expects cartoon villains.
-
Smug journalist is stunned to find normal, thoughtful people.
-
Smug journalist writes a think-piece about it.
The fact that this is news speaks volumes. The Left’s ignorance of half the country isn’t just a blind spot—it’s willful delusion. They’ve spent years crafting a fantasy where conservatives are monsters, only to discover (repeatedly) that the monsters don’t exist…on our side.
The Left’s Dickishness on Display
Meanwhile, who actually behaves like dicks?
-
Teslas set on fire by activists who don’t realize they’re attacking the most environmentally consequential car company in history.
-
Small businesses vandalized because their owners dared to vote Republican.
-
Professors screeching about fascism while enforcing speech codes.
-
Blue-check Twitter mobs ruining lives over jokes.
Leftists operate like Manchurian candidates, triggered by invisible dog whistles. They rage against phantom cruelty while ignoring their own.
The Klepper Effect: A Glimmer of Hope
Klepper deserves some credit. Unlike most of his peers, he actually talked to conservatives—and had the integrity to admit his surprise. It’s the same path Bill Maher took, and like Maher, Klepper may now face backlash from his own side for daring to humanize the enemy.
But here’s the real kicker: Most conservatives already knew this. We live among progressives. We work with them, attend their schools, endure their lectures. We’ve long recognized their hypocrisy—their performative empathy masking deep-seated contempt.
Conclusion: The Left Is the Mark
The dicks of America aren’t the quiet Trump voters mowing their lawns or the blue-collar workers mocked at Ivy League cocktail parties. The dicks are the ones who never question their own righteousness.
Klepper’s moment of clarity won’t change the Left overnight. But it’s another crack in the facade. Eventually, even the most insulated progressives may realize: If you spend your life surrounded by assholes, maybe you’re the asshole.
