Political Gravity – Ep 26-354

There are two kinds of people in politics. People who think they’re creating gravity, and people who discover they’re merely orbiting somebody else’s planet.

That’s become one of the most fascinating political phenomena of the modern era.

Donald Trump has created a strange condition in politics where otherwise intelligent people begin confusing proximity to power with ownership of power.

No crazy Leftist issue stands alone. In a weird way, all their idiocy is interconnected.

They’re symptoms of a broader worldview.

Look at foreign policy.

The same movement that warns endlessly about threats to democracy often seems oddly reluctant to confront regimes that actually suppress democracy.

Iran gets nuance.

China gets nuance.

Hostile governments get nuance.

American citizens who disagree politically get investigations.

That’s a curious set of priorities.

Then there’s the military.

Historically, armies existed to win wars.

Simple concept.

Not complicated.

You train fighters.

You develop strategy.

You project strength.

You defeat enemies.

Yet increasingly, our military appears expected to function as a graduate seminar with camouflage.

Diversity metrics.

Sensitivity training.

Identity initiatives.

Social theories.

Everything except the one thing soldiers have traditionally been expected to do.

Fight and win.

Again, the contradiction emerges.
