The seat nobody should have had to take

America has a culture clash. You can see it in politics, but you don’t need to turn on C-SPAN to find it. Sometimes you can find it in seat 14B.

A 25-year-old woman says the man beside her on a United flight was masturbating. She alerted the crew. According to her account, she was told the flight was full and was directed back to her seat. After landing, she says she was given a $100 travel credit and told to contact police herself.

One hundred dollars.

That’s what my airline gives me when it loses my luggage and returns it smelling like somebody else’s vacation. What’s the exchange rate when a woman says she’s trapped beside a man doing that?

I want you to think about the order of operations. A passenger reports the behavior. The crew has a problem to solve. And the solution she describes is that she goes back to her seat. Maybe there are facts we haven’t heard from United. I’d like to hear them. But if her account is accurate, I have a question: At what point did the person reporting the problem become the person responsible for accommodating it?

That’s today’s show.

We’re going to move from an airplane to a classroom, from a public benefit program to a political campaign. Different stories. Same question every time: Who is expected to adjust when somebody breaks the rules?

I call it a culture clash. I have strong views about who keeps making the excuses. You know that. But I’m going to lay out the stories and ask you to watch what the people in charge actually do.

Because “the flight is full” isn’t a moral principle. It’s a seating chart.
