The prosecutor who dropped the case was fired, I heard.
The prosecutor is Matthew Van Houten, the elected Tompkins County district attorney.
- On October 1, 2026, Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor, taking the Cornell investigation out of his hands.
- Van Houten had already announced that he was reopening the investigation following renewed attention and the woman’s civil lawsuit. Hochul nevertheless said the handling of the original investigation had undermined confidence in his office. ABC News
- The criticism involves substantive investigative questions: whether prosecutors received and reviewed the woman’s complete statement, obtained relevant evidence, and interviewed her. Van Houten says Cornell did not provide his office with the full picture. Consequently, “he did nothing wrong” is not an established finding; his handling remains disputed. washingtonpost.com
