The following article, Kamala Harris: The Poll Numbers Are In, was first published on The Black Sphere.
Forget how Kamala Harris does against Donald Trump. Because her first hurdle is how she does inside her own party.
Remember that Kamala Harris would have ended up towards the bottom when she ran against Joe Biden. But her fortunes turned, when she was turned into an insurance policy to leave Biden alone at least during his first term.
But with Biden’s future in jeopardy, the question must be asked about her viability.
Clearly, Harris get the “Democrat or die” vote of roughly 30 percent of Americans. These are the people who would happily vote for the Devil himself over Donald Trump; actually, over any Republican. But after that voting bloc, things get difficult for Harris.
As MSN reports, Harris loses a major portion of the Democrat vote up front:
With President Biden’s future uncertain, a majority of Democrats say the country would be in good hands if his vice president took over the White House.
A new poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that about 6 in 10 Democrats believe Vice President Kamala Harris would do a good job as president herself. About 2 in 10 Democrats don’t believe she would, and another 2 in 10 say they don’t know enough to say.
Ouch. Twenty percent of Democrat don’t support Harris, and another 20 percent are a jump ball. Can she even win a nomination should it come to that?
The article continues,
The survey comes as an increasing number of Democratic officials are publicly urging Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election after his disastrous debate performance on June 27. Democratic officials are worried that voters don’t believe the 81-year-old president is capable of performing his duties, and many have suggested that Harris or another candidate would fare better against the Republican nominee, former President Trump.
Biden is a drag to the ticket, regardless
Even if Joe Biden leaves, his legacy remains a drag on the ticket, including the person who might replace him. As as the article suggests, recent polls show Democratic voters have soured on Biden as well.
A Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll of Massachusetts residents found that 64 percent of likely Democratic or Democratic-leaning voters want someone other than Biden to face off against Trump. In addition, the AP-NORC national survey likewise found that 65 percent of Democrats say Biden should drop out of the race.
“Someone other than Biden” is mid-60 percent, but what would that number be if the choice was Harris? Based on the earlier poll 40 percent of the party could go against her. But would others fare any better? If so, not by much.
The Democrats are in shambles. And their problems are not based solely on Biden, though the angst is centered around him.
For example, Democrats’ undying support of an ailing Biden won’t go unnoticed by Americans. The coverup of his mental decline will be considered. And that willingness to blatantly lie impacts many other areas, such as immigration, the economy, crime, and foreign policy to name a few.
Americans want to know why Democrats seem to lie about everything. And they are beginning to ask the tough questions.
Van Jones made the point that as the Republicans unify around Trump, Democrats disintegrate around Biden. Clearly there are two factions within the Democratic Party centered around keeping Biden or tossing him to the wolves.
Frankly, I don’t believe anybody within the Democratic Party wants to keep Biden. More likely those that fall on that side of the issue want to limit the damage getting rid of Biden could cause.
Ironically, the Dump Biden camp see their view as minimizing the damage caused by Biden. However, their lateness in acting comes fraught with many dangers.
As the battle wages, Trump picks off moderate Democrats and Independents and defies the odds. Trump’s resilience has proven to be a real motivator in shifting almost all voting blocs. And the polls show it.
While Democrats may very well shoe-horn Harris into their candidate, she will never be elected or even selected president. Trump now grips the Republican Party with a firm hand, with well over 90 percent approval. Harris would be lucky to get to 70 percent approval by election time.
