The Times They Are A-Changin’
Conservative pundit, writer, and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza posted an interesting list of ‘inconvenient truths’ on his Instagram page that occurred over a 3-day period following Donald Trump’s presidential victory on November 5:
To dispel cries of “fake news”, let us take a look at each one line-by-line to check the legitimacy of their validity.
#1) First Female Chief-of-Staff Appointed.
IMAGE: BBC
NBC News reported on November 8:
President-elect Trump named his co-campaign manager Susie Wiles as his incoming White House chief of staff. Wiles will be the first woman to hold that position, one of the most important nonelected posts in the administration.
#2) NYC to Stop Giving Debit Cards to Illegal Immigrants
CBS News informed on November 7:
New York City will end its controversial debit card program for migrants.
Under the pilot program, migrants staying in city-funded hotels received pre-paid cards to buy their own food and other necessities. The city spent $3.6 million on debit cards for about 2,600 migrant families who are staying in shelters without kitchen access.
#3) US Companies Bring Production Home
US Commerce Department press release announcing investments in New York and Pennsylvania that would enhance the production for semiconductor manufacturing, dated November 8:
Department of Commerce signed two separate preliminary memoranda of terms (PMT) under the CHIPS and Science Act to provide Corning up to $32 million in proposed direct funding and Powerex up to $3 million in proposed direct funding. President Biden and Vice President Harris signed the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act to usher in a new era of semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, bringing with it a revitalized domestic supply chain, good-paying jobs, and investments in the industries of the future.
#4) Stock Market Hits All-Time Highs
IMAGE: Reuters
A stunned Reuters wrote on November 8:
Expectations that such policies will be pushed through under Trump to some degree have helped lift corners of the stock market higher, boost the dollar and weigh on Treasuries, as investors recalibrated their portfolios for stronger growth, looser regulations and the possibility that inflation worries could keep the Federal Reserve from cutting rates too deeply next year.
#5) Bitcoin Hits All-Time High
CNBC made the surprise announcement on November 10:
IMAGE: Quartz
President-elect Donald Trump promised on the campaign trail to turn the United States into the “crypto capital of the planet.” His multiple pledges to the crypto community included launching a national crypto stockpile with the more than $16 billion in bitcoin the U.S. government has amassed through asset seizures, as well as slashing interest rates. The easing of monetary policy typically dovetails with a surge in crypto prices since it makes it cheaper to borrow money.
#6) Newest Migrant Caravans Breaking Up
IMAGE: BBC
Newsweek uncovered the illegal immigrants began turning around on November 7:
Migrants are abandoning a caravan headed for the United States because Donald Trump’s election win has dashed their “dream of getting out”.
Trump’s plans to impose tougher border controls, including deportations and limitations on asylum claims, have cast doubt over the possibility of migrants successfully crossing into the US.
In his victory speech, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to “seal up those borders” and stressed that legal immigration would be the only accepted path into the U.S.
#7) Qatar Agrees to Evict Hamas Leaders
IMAGE: Al-Monitor
Financial Times reveals that US pressure on the world stage suddenly has ‘teeth’ again on November 8:
Qatar has told the leaders of Hamas to leave the country following pressure from Washington, in a significant shift in policy by the Gulf state.
The gas-rich state has hosted Hamas’s political office in its capital, Doha, since 2012, when Syria’s civil war forced it to leave its base in Damascus, and the US asked Qatar to open a channel of communication with the Palestinian group.
#8) Hamas Wants “Immediate End” to War
IMAGE: Newsweek
Newsweek stated on November 6:
A senior Hamas official has called for an immediate end to Israel’s war against the group in the Gaza Strip and a plan to achieve Palestinian statehood in remarks shared with Newsweek in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s election victory.
With continued signs of disagreement between President Joe Biden and Netanyahu over the course of the war despite sizable U.S. military aid, the Israeli premier was the first to congratulate Trump on what was described as “history’s greatest comeback.”
#9) Taliban Claims to Want a “New Chapter”
IMAGE: Business Recorder
Afghanistan’s Taliban government immediately congratulated Donald Trump for his second win, knowingly aware that he would not be as foolish as Biden had been.
According to Agence France Presse (AFP) on November 6:
Afghanistan’s Taliban government on Wednesday said it hoped for a “new chapter” in relations with the United States after Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.
Republicans have hammered Trump’s successor, current President Joe Biden, for the chaos during the withdrawal, which saw the deaths of 13 US service members in a suicide bombing at Kabul airport and the near-immediate retaking of the capital by the Taliban.
The Taliban government has not been recognised by any state since they swept to power off the back of an offensive surge in the months and weeks leading up to the US withdrawal.
#9) China Wants “Peaceful Coexistence”
After assuming control of the Panama Canal, swallowing Hong Kong unimpeded, continuing to amass greater power within the BRICS alliance, while openly preparing for an invasion of Taiwan, and remaining constant threat to its Asian Pacific neighbors…the uttering of the phrase “peaceful coexistence” sounds more akin to “Resistance is Futile.”
Fortune delved into the New Cold War to investigate the legitimacy of China’s recent olive branch on November 6:
China said Wednesday it hoped for “peaceful coexistence” with the United States as Donald Trump neared a decisive victory over Kamala Harris in the country’s presidential election.
During his time as president, Trump launched a gruelling trade war with China, imposing swingeing tariffs on Chinese goods for what he said were unfair practices by Beijing, such as theft of US technology and currency manipulation.
The US election was closely watched in China.
Beijing as a matter of principle does not comment on other countries’ elections, though it said it opposes China being used as an issue on the campaign trail.
#10) Russia is Ready to “Speak” with the US
‘There is a major problem when two of the leaders of the world’s superpowers have not spoken to oneanother in nearly three years, and one even refuses to speak to the other. Where is the diplomacy, and how is progress made for the good of the world?
Politico learned, that Russian President Vladimir Putin is now ready to once again speak to an American leader; Donald Trump, as of November 8:
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on his U.S. election victory, praising the Republican’s “manly” response to an attempted assassination — and saying he’s “ready” to speak with him.
Putin confirmed he had yet to talk with Trump in the wake of his victory — but indicated that he’d pick up the phone if the U.S. president-elect called.
Asked whether he was prepared to hold discussions with Trump, even before he’s ingaurated, Putin said his administration is “ready, ready.”
#11) EU to Buy US Gas, not Russian Gas
IMAGE: The Economic Times
Drill Baby, Drill! Turns out this wasn’t just a 2008 campaign catchphrase, but a strategy to get Americans back to work in 2024.
CBS News gets to the bottom of the details from November 11:
The European Union (EU) Ambassador to the United States said the Lone Star State could get a boost from increased exports of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to Europe.
EU has been buying $65 billion worth of LNG a year from the U.S., including Texas—a 70% increase from what it used to be.
When asked if expected the EU to buy more LNG from Texas and the U.S. the Ambassador said, “Hopefully we will phase out Russian LNG as well. So that gives huge possibilities for states like Texas to export even more to Europe.”
The Ambassador said the EU’s trade with and investment in Texas adds up to nearly 270,000 jobs and more than $300 billion a year.
#12) Ukraine Leaders in Talks with Trump/Musk
IMAGE: Arise Media
In related to a couple of stories from above, not only are the participants in the Israeli-Hamas Conflict looking to cease hostilities, and Putin is picking up the red phone again; but there maybe hope of beginning the process towards ending war in Ukraine.
New York Times pens on November 8:
President-elect Donald J. Trump spoke on Wednesday with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and during the call handed the phone to Elon Musk, the increasingly influential billionaire who has played a key role in providing communications capability to Ukraine in its war with Russia, a person familiar with the discussion said.
Mr. Trump has promised to bring a quick end to the conflict, a position widely seen as allowing Russia to hold on to the territory it has seized since invading Ukraine in 2022. During a presidential debate, Mr. Trump declined to say which side he wanted to see win the war, and he has suggested that Mr. Zelensky has gotten too much military and financial aid from the Biden administration.
After Mr. Trump was declared the winner of the presidential race early on Wednesday, Mr. Zelensky urged Mr. Trump to help strengthen Ukraine against Russian aggression.
